Apple cider vinegar is more popular today than it has ever been before. Many people have heard of all of the health benefits associated with apple cider vinegar. However, not everyone knows how to make this natural vinegar into a home remedy for everything from bad breath to acne to nail fungus.

It all begins with acetic acid. Apple cider vinegar may cause some side effects for some people. If you are allergic to acetic acid or you have sensitive skin, you should avoid apple cider vinegar. It should not be consumed as well. However, it is very mild for most people and adds only a bit of extra flavoring to every dish. If you do experience side effects that seem like they may be caused by the vinegar you are using, try adjusting the amount of vinegar or using a bit less of it.

There is one case report that claims one case of anaphylactic shock because of the high potassium levels in the vinegar. That would certainly explain the low potassium levels in the tea bags as well. I was unable to find that report, but it is possible that the anaphylactic shock came from the tea, which is high in potassium.

One of the purported health benefits of apple cider vinegar is weight loss. That is probably due to the acetic acid, which helps break down fats. The problem is that many people who are overweight also have low potassium levels in their bodies. So, while the acetic acid in the vinegar may help with weight loss, it will do little for those who need to lose potassium and other electrolyte levels to balance their blood sugar level. That’s why it’s not a good idea to use apple cider vinegar for weight loss purposes alone unless it contains nutrients that counteract the effects of the acetic acid. In other words, don’t use it as a magic weight-loss drug!

A second purported health benefit of apple cider vinegar is its effect on lowering low potassium levels in the body. Again, the problem with this is that there are likely to be other factors that contribute to low potassium levels, so that this is another case where adding foods to your diet that lower potassium might be more helpful than the vinegar itself. But, when used as a natural remedy for digestive pain, it probably has some benefit.

Another purported apple cider vinegar benefit is its effect on cholesterol levels. One study suggests that it may lower them by reducing the absorption of fatty acids. Another study suggests that it reduces the risk of heart disease. The bottom line may help you in other ways, such as providing lots of fiber and other minerals, but it certainly does not have a direct medical benefit. The possible benefits, then, are indirect and primarily cosmetic in nature.

Another purported benefit of apple cider vinegar is its effect on weight loss. One study suggests that it may reduce the number of calories you eat by as much as four percent. However, most experts agree that the effect of any dietary change should be evaluated in light of other factors, such as your age, physical activity level, the quality of the food you eat, and your overall health. For most people, it is probably best to take in fewer calories than you burn, even if that means eating less delicious tasting foods at the same time.

Apple Cider Vinegar Side Effects

There are, of course, other possible side effects of taking in apple cider vinegar. It can result in minor cases of diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, or acid reflux, especially if you take it in large quantities. It may also cause flatulence and, in some individuals, serious episodes of acne, heartburn, or stomach upsets. If you believe that you could be affected by these or other possible side effects, talk to your doctor before taking it.
